The Fritzes purchased this farm in Waterford, VA in 2017. It was previously a livestock farm with grazing animals that helped keep the soil in good shape. It has gentle slopes to keep the vines well drained. The soils are the typical red clay of the area. The property is 14 acres in total straddling Catoctin Creek. Just over 5 acres are planted with vines in a dense spacing ( 8 ‘ x 3.5 ‘ ) configuration. The vines are all French ENTAV clones including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Petit Manseng, Viognier and Chardonnay. The vineyard is named after the proliferation of quartz stones around the property and the Creek.
This vineyard was originally planted in 2006 by the Beddow Family. Bruce Beddow Sr. had a green thumb and loved growing grape vines. Bruce Jr. and his father planted several blocks of grapes together. They visited Bluemont Vineyard in 2008 to discuss the possibilities for selling their Merlot and Petit Manseng and have been growing grapes for Bluemont Vineyard ever since.
They have two properties where they grow Windhorn Grapes in Waterford, VA. The farm currently has 12 acres planted with numerous varietals such as Petit Manseng, Viognier, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Tannat and the hybrid Vidal Blanc. They take great pride in our grape quality and spare no expense in maintaining the health of our soil and our beautiful vines.
